warnings for vibrant/eyestrain imagery + mentions of heavy topics
it seems you've wandered into a dream, go back to reality?

+.HI THERE.+
you must have clicked the suspicious lollipop!!!
welcome to the sugar rush!!!!✨🍭🍬✨🍰_ _ _>>what is this?sugar coat is a stylistic concept i've been experimenting with for my art.
the idea of it is using candy and confectionary to represent select themes.
_ _ _>>WHAT KIND OF THEMES?
Themes may consist of more graphic and heavy topics or simply a way of communicating / representing more emotional pieces. Trigger warnings will be issued accordingly.
These themes exclude topics like s*xual assault or s*icide. Not all pieces are necessarily about these themes, sometimes they are just fun experiments.

SUGAR SCALE

The "sugar scale" is a measurement of how saccharine and sweet the piece is.Low --> high

LOW

MEDIUM

HIGH

>>LOW
The lower scale has a scratchy texture to the lineart, the colors are more natural, and is more rooted in reality.
>>MEDIUM
this is where my artstyle tends to default. the themes aren't heavy, but on occassion there is hints of sweet to elude to stronger emotions.
>>HIGH
The higher scale switches to a smoother brush, has higher saturation, and often changes the texture of the item it represents.
n: the hair, eyes, and accessories.

Cavity

scale: lowFirst attempt at the sugar coated art style, there's no real themes just playing around with textures :]The chosen textures have to do with the individual depicted. This my persona, Cavity.
In sugarcoat, they often have a fizzy soda texture to their hair and hard candy horns.

Amber cheese

For my friend amber cheese!!!who is definitely konpeito in my mind forever. :)Konpeito is very tedious to make, and takes a lot of time and precision to get right. Though the shape of it seems really spiky and tough, sugar still meltsits a lovely confection cherished by many

"Problematic, sympathetic, enigmatic, don't you get it?"
The comic takes on the aesthetic of valentines day cards, the hues consist primarily of reddish pinks and lilacs. There are hidden yellows and greens, but they are mainly washed out.
The main character is green, representing the aromantic flag. They are outlined in white to signify they dont belong in the setting.

"and though the rose... it buds!"
Continuing with previous themes, the yellow rose is a pop-out card that unfurls when you open it.
the outside of the card is black, the rose is not yet developed, signifying the receiver doesn't know what to expect.
The background is purple. a darker, redder shade is splattered ominously in the background.
"Its not the red that you love."
The red intensifies in the background as a sickly shade, loose shades forming simple shapes of roses.
The recipient is disappointed by the outcome.
Red rope and a frilly, laced valentines day card looms over the characters head.
they hold the yellow rose in their hand close to their chest.
"Caramel sweet, but you prefer blood"
The yellow shade turns from orange to red, reminiscent of blood.
Blood is often symbolism for strong familial relationships, intimacy, and vulnerability.Caramel is sweet, but savory. Digestible, in comparison to blood, which can make you sick."You can split its stem, dye the tips, dye the hem. But the rose is just sick."
Roses can be dyed, it is usually done with white roses for simplicity and is done by splitting the stem and feeding it colored water.
despite these conditions, the yellow rose attempts to become red.Natural red 4 is made from cochineal beetles, hence the bug and mortar&pestle.the process fails, killing the rose (and the relationship) and therefore being cut."In this loop, I'm caught. They love me, they love me not."
the daisy game originates from childhood. the rules is to pick off petals of the daisy, alternating from the phrase "they love me" , "they love me not. The last petal you land on is your determined answer.
The hands have gone through multiple flowers, due to an undesired outcome."The butterflies don't flutter, they kick."
feeling butterflies is used to describe nervousness, usually in terms of a crush.
In this case, the butterflies do not flutter, but kick. Instead of nerves, it's intense guilt. They swarm, and cover the character's mouth. The butterfly over the characters mouth is blue, symbolizing a hidden wish.

Sugarshock

Second real attempt at trying to solidify the concept of sugar coat. Its a remake of the image below. The hair is more of a taffy texture, where the skin is paper white and the skeleton underneathe a brittle and sugary texture before melting into a more honey texture.
No real message, just what it feels like to have a caffeine headache lol.

Love sick

The main textures in the piece are soda, gum, pop rocks, hard sugar, and mentos. The character holds a bottle of pepto bismol and a measuring cap.In their mouth is a lollipop as well as a lit candle, which smokes a trail of sugar dust. The chest has melted to reveal a ribcage, calling back to the "sugarshock" piece. Below, strands of gum spill out, reminiscent of intestines.

THe main theme of this piece centers around the feeling of nausea and dizziness.
The character is laying, arm over their eyes, in a dizzy state.
The background:
The background is similar to a soda texture as well as a bath bomb. It's shapes and colors are symbolic of an unfocused environment that intensifies the dizziness of the piece.
Candy:
The candy in the image is gum, mentos, pop rocks, and hard candy. Mentos is known for causing an extreme reaction with soda, causing a fizzy explosion.
In childhood, a common myth we all believed is that drinking soda and eating pop rocks would cause our stomachs to explode or become upset.Chewing gum is a popular candy with children, though they often have a tendency to swallow it. Gum cannot be digested, and it's often said that it'll stay in your intestines for several years before it passes. (untrue)All these put together is why the character has some handy pepto bismol =)Pepto bismol & measuring cap
The character holds the measuring cap and pepto bismol similar to a way one would hold alcohol and a shot glass. The title of the piece is "love sick" because oxytocin (love chemical) is associated with a feeling of warmth, fuzziness, dizziness, and even acute inebriation.
All these elements combined, the character has passed that stage into a state of sick.
